Annie Sloan Painters in Residence projects at a glimpse
About

Painters in Residence

Annie Sloan set up her ‘Painters in Residence’ programme to collaborate with like-minded people and showcase the innovative and inspiring ways you can use Chalk Paint™.

How does it work?

Founded in 2014, the Painters in Residence concept is loosely based on the way an art gallery or museum will have an ‘artist in residence’, to live in the gallery as a way to get inspired to create art inside or outside the venue.

Each Painter in Residence is carefully selected and invited by Annie based on their skill as furniture painters and the pieces they create. They won’t be taking up residence at Annie Sloan HQ, but they will be exploring the boundaries of decorative furniture painting from their home studios. They are all different in approach, colour, tone, textures and style, and have been chosen from all around the world.

Meet our current resident and previous residents below, discover their style, residency projects and be inspired yourself. You can also visit our Inspiration page for all our Painters in Residences’ projects. And remember to follow #PaintersInResidence on Instagram and Facebook, as well as Annie’s Painters in Residence board on Pinterest.

Our Current Resident

Aida franco
Phoenix, Arizona

Aida Franco

If you haven’t heard of With Love Furniture, please allow us to introduce this passionate, talented and adventurous artist as Annie Sloan’s latest Painter In Residence.

Aida is from Mexico originally and is currently based in Phoenix, Arizona. She comes from an artistic family and grew up surrounded by artistic expression in many forms; from music and visual arts to a Bolshoi dancer!

She discovered her passion for painting when she moved from Barcelona, Spain to the United States. Upcycling unwanted furniture was an outlet for her creativity which allowed her the flexibility to take care of her young daughter.

As an artist, she’s always been drawn to bold colours and enjoys experimenting with different styles. Inspired hugely by her Mexican ethnicity, Aida loves incorporating vibrant patterns into her work. She’s particularly drawn to the minimalist design of mid-century modern furniture, and the way her flamboyant style transforms and enhances these geometric shaped pieces.  She always approaches each project with a clear plan and vision, ensuring that the outcome aligns with her creative vision.

Her work will inspire and delight those who love painted mid century modern furniture, joyful artistic expression, and the magic of bold design.

The Rocky Crystal

Introducing Nick Spencer, the creative force behind Rocky Crystal and Annie Sloan’s upcoming Painter in Residence. With a style that’s best described as a captivating blend of boho and grunge, Nick’s charismatic work is undoubtedly 100% unique.

His journey as a full-time furniture painter began in 2008 within his family’s business based in Croydon, South London. Since then, he’s embarked on an artistic adventure, bringing his passion for vintage-style painted furniture with a French rustic flair to life. He’s worked extensively with Annie and spoken at events with our very own Jonathon Marc Mendes.

Nick’s talents have expanded to include the modern industrial aesthetic, and we particularly love watching him paint his Rock n Roll pieces alongside his son, showcasing and sharing his boundless creativity through the transformative power of paint. He’s poised to bring fresh perspectives and extraordinary designs to the world of furniture restoration and decoration, and we want him to share with all of us just how he does it. Stay tuned for his exciting residency with Annie Sloan!

Atelier 1966 chest of drawers painted in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint
Quebec, Canada

Martine Lestage

Martine Lestage, founder of Atelier 1966, is based in Quebec, Canada. At the end of the 90s, Martine discovered Annie Sloan’s books and stencils. She started using them everywhere: in several areas of her house, on the porch of her parent’s cottage, on any kind of object, everywhere! There’s a reason Martine gets called “Miss Pochoir” (Mrs. Stencil in French!).

After raising her daughters and working for the real estate company she founded with her husband, Martine wanted to do something for herself, something for her personal fulfillment. Martine started transforming and upcycling furniture as a hobby, but it soon became a full-time job. Little did she know, many years later her work would be recognized throughout the world, particularly by Annie Sloan! Martine’s specialises in all forms of texture and colour.
