Annie Sloan Painters in Residence projects at a glimpse
About

Painters in Residence

Annie Sloan set up her ‘Painters in Residence’ programme to collaborate with like-minded people and showcase the innovative and inspiring ways you can use Chalk Paint®.

How does it work?

Founded in 2014, the Painters in Residence concept is loosely based on the way an art gallery or museum will have an ‘artist in residence’, to live in the gallery as a way to get inspired to create art inside or outside the venue.

Each Painter in Residence is carefully selected and invited by Annie based on their skill as furniture painters and the pieces they create. They won’t be taking up residence at Annie Sloan HQ, but they will be exploring the boundaries of decorative furniture painting from their home studios. They are all different in approach, colour, tone, textures and style, and have been chosen from all around the world.

Meet our current resident and previous residents below, discover their style, residency projects and be inspired yourself. You can also visit our Inspiration page for all our Painters in Residences’ projects. And remember to follow #PaintersInResidence on Instagram and Facebook, as well as Annie’s Painters in Residence board on Pinterest.

Chloe Kempster

UK based Chloe Kempster is the brains and brush behind ‘Maisie’s House’. Simple styling allows the Fine Art details of this one-woman creative powerhouse’s painted furniture to really shine. Nothing is more persuasive an argument in favour of upcycling old instead of buying new than Chloe’s stunning, artistic, witty painted pieces. This is furniture art in its purest form; and it’s driven by a passion for sustainability, a desire to leave the world a better more beautiful place with each commission, and pure creative impetus! Annie Sloan Painter in Residence Charlie Massey of Girl in Blue Designs green ombre side cabinet painted with Chalk Paint®
America

Girl in Blue Designs

Charlie Anne Massey, better known as Girl in Blue Designs, first picked up a Chalk Paint® brush whilst pregnant with her daughter and finding herself with a little spare time. What started as a hobby has now turned into a fully-fledged business for Charlie, who sources second-hand furniture in her home state of Georgia, USA to upcycle with Chalk Paint® and sell on her Etsy shop. Her residency was all about ombrés, distresses, layering, and more.

Annie Sloan Painter in Residence Jeanie Simpson Art Deco inspired wardrobe painted with Chalk Paint®
New Zealand

Jeanie Simpson

From a country sheep farm in a small region in New Zealand, Jeanie Simpson explores the art of up-cycling furniture and homeware using Chalk Paint®. Jeanie has always had a strong interest in art and design – something that she draws on heavily for inspiration in her pieces which are all meticulously researched. Jeanie is also passionate about re-using tired, unloved furniture from the past because of the better quality workmanship and materials, and the sense of history not seen in modern pieces.

Annie Sloan Painter in Residence Ildiko Horvath blue and green ombre wardrobe painted with Chalk Paint®
Canada/Hungary

Ildiko Horvath

Based in Canada, Hungarian-born Ildiko Horvath has been creating wonderful work with Annie Sloan’s paint and products over recent years. She has no formal training as either an artist or interior designer (she used to be a piano teacher in Hungary!) but has had her home featured on HGTV and in House and Home Magazine. She is the master of the ombré technique, gradually blending colours from one to the other and creating a gorgeously rich and sumptuous patina.
