You Will Need

• 120ml pots of Chalk Paint™ in your chosen colours (we used Frida Blue, Antibes Green, Original, Capri Pink and Arles)
• Matt or Gloss Lacquer
• Templates
• Pencil
• 1 x Small Chalk Paint Brush
• 1 x Detail Brushes
• Small Sponge Roller with 5 sponges
• Carbon paper
• Cardboard or paper
• Craft knife/scalpel & scissors
• Cutting mat if using scalpel or craft knife
• MixMat or similar non-stick mat
• Decorator’s masking tape
• Sandpaper
• Placemats – old or buy new

Step 1

Lightly sand the placements to key the surface before painting them in two base coats of Chalk Paint in Original, allowing each coat to dry fully.

Step 2

Download and print the templates and using a pencil and carbon paper transfer them onto the cardboard. Using a craft knife, cut the shapes out to create stencils. Hold onto the cut outs too.

Step 3

Attach the bird shapes to both sides of your placemat with masking tape. Roller one side in 50:50 Capri Pink and Original. Repeat on the other side with Capri Pink. Remove the bird shapes and leave to dry.

Step 4

Change to a clean roller head. Lay your leaf stencil in a central position and apply multiple thin coats of Antibes Green to the stencil, building it up gently for even coverage.

Step 5

Put your star stencil in place and using a new roller head, apply thin coats of Arles. Repeat the same process using the bird stencil in Capri Pink and Frida Blue and a clean roller head.

Step 6

Wait for each colour to dry thoroughly before stencilling the next colour on top. When dry, lacquer your placemats for durability.

Top Tip

Use a MixMat to mix your paint. Try not to water your paint down too much or press down too hard when using a roller to avoid the colours bleeding under the edges of your stencil. Test on paper first to check you have the right consistency.
