Sanding for a Rustic Distressed Finish

The key to creating a heavily distressed, worn and weathered finish is in the sanding. Annie shows you how to do this in a few simple steps.

  1. To create a really rustic finish you need some rough sandpaper, and to sand before you wax. Select both a coarse and fine sandpaper to create variation in your finish.
  2. Choose where you would like to sand and think about how much of a distressed finish you would like to achieve. Sanding works very well in detailed areas and the coarser the sandpaper, the more distressed the finish.
  3. Alternate between the fine and coarse sandpaper, stripping back to the base layer and, for a heavily distressed finish, back to the original surface in parts of the piece. Continue until you have created your desired effect.
