This is Kacha’s technique to created raised stencil art on French inspired piece of furniture using Chalk Paint and glass bead gel.
For this project, Kacha uses Chateau Grey and Old Ochre Chalk Paint and Clear Chalk Paint Wax to demonstrate.
KACHA’S TOP TIPS
Choose a flat piece of furniture
This technique works best on flat pieces of furniture. It’s the perfect way to transform a boring or damaged piece of furniture into a glamorous statement piece. Ragging and stencilling hide lots of damage! Don’t forget to clean your piece thoroughly before you start painting.
Apply a paint wash
After painting the piece in Chateau Grey and leaving it to dry, apply a paint wash. To make a wash, use Old Ochre mixed with water to make the paint super thin. Then apply it like you would a stain over your base coat in soft sweeping strokes in every direction.
Ragging will hide imperfections
Rag painting creates a soft, textured effect and is a very forgiving effect on a piece that isn’t perfect. To rag your piece don’t wipe your wash off, but take it off with an old rag to create a unique aged look. Rag in different directions, use different colours of paint wash – you won’t mess it up. In two simple steps you have created a lovely cloudy aged effect which camouflages all imperfections.
Create a raised stencil effect
To create a raised stencil effect on your piece, add glass bead gel to Chalk Paint. You can use glass bead gel or its own or mix with any colour paint and it will take on that colour. If you want a glamorous look, you can use a gold, pink or black metallic paint. Just make sure when you apply your paint you don’t move! If there are any gaps between the surface of your piece and your stencil, the paint will bleed through.
Protect your piece with Chalk Paint Wax
Once your piece is dry, it’s essential to apply a coat of clear Chalk Paint Wax. This will deepen the colour and protect your handiwork.
