East Asian Mural
by Janice Issitt
Painter in Residence Janice Issitt was inspired by the traditional motifs and colours of the Far East when creating this piece of wall art, painted in Chalk Paint.
This wall started with a range of Janice’s left over Chalk Paint from other projects, some straight from the tin and others some mixes, all thrown at the wall and rolled out wet. Here you can see Provence, Greek Blue, Old White and more. The result is a beautiful blend of blue pastel hues and soft textures, including paint drips and roller mottling.
Once dry Janice stencilled images of cherry blossoms, flowers and birds. The branches and flowers are painted in Old White, Primer Red, Barcelona Orange and Emperor’s Silk. The leaves are Antibes Green and the birds are Napoleonic Blue.
To complement this project, Janice rescued an old side table painting it with Chalk Paint in Emperor’s Silk to echo the Asian look of the stencilled wall. A cluster of flowers on the bottom has been stencilled with Florence and Brass Leaf. The inside of the cupboard is also painted in Florence and the edge has been gilded using Gold Size and Brass Leaf. The whole cupboard has been finished with Clear Chalk Paint Wax.
