Abstract Confetti Tallboy
by Chloe Kempster
The final piece Painter in Residence project by Chloe Kempster is an explosion of pastel confetti expertly painted on a mid-century tallboy.
This piece is the final instalment under Chloe Kempster’s reign as Annie’s Painter in Residence. A showstopping soft abstract using a whole spectrum of Chalk Paint™ shades, this head turning number was partly inspired by the pioneering abstract work of Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky.
From a distance, this piece looks as though it may be decoupaged with wallpaper or covered in fabric. On closer inspection it reveals itself to be a completely one-of-a-kind bespoke abstract Chalk Paint™ masterpiece. In order to create something similar at home, choose a palette of bright colours and be prepared to add in lots and lots of layers to achieve the soft, organic mood Chloe has evoked here.
For this piece Chloe used Chalk Paint™ in Chicago Grey, Barcelona Orange, Florence, Antibes Green, Provence, Henrietta, Graphite, Firle, Rodmell mixed with Pure for a lilac, Firle mixed with Florence for a bottle green, and Pure mixed with Emperor’s Silk for a hot pink.
She began with a base of Pure then applied geometric shapes in various colours over the top. Each of these shapes was then blended into the Pure to remove any hard lines and give a more painterly finish. The frame has been painted with Chalk Paint™ in Athenian Black and finished with Gloss Chalk Paint™ Lacquer, whilst the drawers are finished with Black Chalk Paint™ Wax (for depth and nuance) and Clear Chalk Paint™ Wax (to protect). The difference in finish between velvety matt wax and high gloss lacquer makes the drawers look even more like framed canvases.
