Kids’ Christmas Bedroom
by Lucy Tiffney
Athenian Black may not be the most obvious choice for a child’s bedroom, but here artist and designer Lucy Tiffney expertly demonstrates why this non-traditional pitch-black obsidian could be the perfect choice for your little ones’ sanctuary.
Children respond to colour. Their instinctive attraction towards brighter shades isn’t hampered by a learned fear of standing out, and we should capitalise on that! Bright shades inspire, build future confidence with experimentation, and activate fertile imaginations. The beauty of using Athenian Black is that all other colours will pop against this most dramatic backdrop. As with white, all colours go with black; but they pop against black rather than sitting more gently alongside a blank canvas of white.
The fairytale figures painted on the walls are typical of Lucy Tiffney’s work. They evoke the charm and magic of mythological fantasy worlds and are sure to inspire joy, delight and wonder. Colour-wise, Lucy used her signature palette of brights and made the most of Chalk Paint™’s amazing mixing qualities to create an exhaustive spectrum of shades for her wildlife mural. The furniture in the room also adheres to a vibrant and joyful palette including English Yellow on the bed, Greek Blue and Provence on the first chair, Barcelona Orange and Provence on the second chair, and Antibes Green on the trolley. All the furniture has been protected using Clear Chalk Paint™ Wax. The floor, meanwhile, is painted using Chalk Paint™ in Old White. This will reflect light and give a fresh feel to the space whilst offsetting any possibility of dinginess from the dark pigment on the walls. When painting flooring always protect and finish with at least two coats of Chalk Paint™ Lacquer for a moppable, cleanable, durable finish.
We’ve dressed the space up for Christmas by adding a “Santa Stop Here” sign and an overflowing sack made of Ticking Fabric in Graphite. Further presents are wrapped in paper painted with Chalk Paint™ in Barcelona Orange, Antibes Green and Amsterdam Green.
