HOW TO THRIFT HOMEWARE & FURNITURE FOR YOUR HOME

House of hetheringtons

By now, most of us are aware of the benefits of upcycling – it’s good for the planet, our wallets, and our mental well-being. And if you’re reading this blog, you might already know that Chalk Paint is the quickest, simplest and easiest way to transform furniture. But perhaps you’re wondering how, or indeed, where to start thrifting?

Why is thrifting good?

Thrifting is not only environmentally friendly, but it’s also a delightful adventure! It often means discovering unique, characterful pieces of well-made furniture that have stood the test of time. Sure, they might need a little TLC or have some cosmetic imperfections, but that’s where Chalk Paint comes to the rescue! Thrifting saves money, promotes “slow living,” and encourages thoughtful consumerism, all of which are crucial considerations in 2024!

Top tips for thrifting from an expert. We spoke to thrifting guru @houseofhetheringtons for her top tips:

  1. Have a clear vision: Know what you’re looking for and the style you want to achieve. This will help you sift through the treasures amidst the trash. If you’re unsure about a piece, snap a photo. You can always revisit it later if it keeps calling to you.
  2. Be patient: Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a perfectly curated home. Allow yourself time to stumble upon that perfect piece. The thrill of finding “The One” is worth the wait!
  3. Don’t be afraid to haggle: Depending on where you are, you might be able to negotiate a better price. Sellers at flea markets or estate sales are often open to offers, especially if you’re buying multiple items.

WHERE TO THRIFT

In both the US and UK, there’s a plethora of thrifting options waiting to be explored. Here are some recommendations:

  • Flea markets: Visit early in the morning for the best deals.
  • Goodwill stores: Make friends with the staff to learn about when new arrivals come in.
  • Reclamation yards, yard or estate sales: Sellers are eager to part with their furniture, often at low prices.
  • Antique markets: While prices may be higher, you’ll find curated selections of quality pieces. It can be a good idea to visit these places and see which pieces contain
  • Online platforms: Facebook Marketplace is a treasure trove for bargains, especially for larger items. Consider hidden costs of hiring transport to collect that may impact how much of a bargain you’re actually getting.

Community events: Check out local fair calendars for vintage markets, car boots and antique fairs.

Remember: When thrifting, prioritize substance over style. As long as a piece is well-built and functional, you can breathe new life into it with Chalk Paint to match your home decor.

So, whether you’re scouring flea markets, rummaging through charity shops, or exploring online listings, remember that every piece has the potential for a stunning transformation. Happy thrifting and happy upcycling!
