Applying Annie Sloan Satin Paint is totally straightforward. Always be sure to give any paint you open a thorough stir before use. This will redistribute pigments evenly and ensure the paint applies easily. We recommend using a brush rather than a roller for greater control.

As Annie Sloan Satin Paint is designed for use on skirting, dado rails and millwork rather than walls, we recommend using a smaller brush. Applying paint with the smallest sized brush suitable for your project helps avoid using too much paint, causing drips, accidentally painting walls and flooring, and ultimately the need for time-consuming touch-ups. We recommend the Annie Sloan Small Flat Brush. Synthetic, smooth bristled brushes are the best choice for Annie Sloan Satin Paint as organic bristled brushes are more expensive and will not have any impact on the finish. If you prefer to use rollers, you can find small-sized rollers suitable for detail work here on our website. You may need to use an extra coat when applying paint with rollers rather than brushes as they give a thinner layer of paint.

Annie Sloan Satin Paint is water-based, meaning you can add water to the mixture to help it apply more smoothly if you’re experiencing difficulties with application, but we do not recommend heavily diluting as this will negate the durability of the formula.

Is Annie Sloan Satin Paint Hard to Maintain?

Annie Sloan Satin Paint is designed to be easy to maintain. Simply paint, allow to dry, add further coats if required, and treat with care for 14 days after painting. Once 14 days have passed, Annie Sloan Satin Paint will have cured and hardened to reach peak durability. After this time you can keep Annie Sloan Satin Paint clean and maintained using soap and water. We recommend avoiding harsh cleaning chemicals containing bleach as over time these will weaken the finish.

Can You Paint Over Annie Sloan Satin Paint Without Sanding?

Due to the slight sheen in Annie Sloan Satin Paint we recommend sanding gently to key the surface before repainting. You should always ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free from any dust, debris or oil-based contaminants before using any paints.

Does Annie Sloan Satin Paint Scratch Easily?

Put simply, no. Annie Sloan Satin Paint does not scratch easily. Annie Sloan Satin Paint is a paint which has been specifically formulated to be hardwearing, durable and long lasting. That’s what makes it so perfect for the busy parts of your home, such as kitchen cabinetry, skirting boards or bannisters.

What Happens If You Paint Flat Over Annie Sloan Satin Paint?

Other paints will struggle to adhere to Annie Sloan Satin Paint because of the ingredients we’ve included to make it so hard wearing and durable. The slight sheen in the finish offers excellent strengthening properties but will affect how many coats of paint are required to achieve even coverage if you attempt to directly apply a flat paint afterwards. We recommend keying the surface by sanding, applying a primer, or using a coat of Chalk Paint™ to prepare for repainting.

Can You Put Primer Over Annie Sloan Satin Paint?

Yes, you can use a primer before or after applying Annie Sloan Satin Paint if you so wish.

What Is The Difference Between Annie Sloan Satin Paint and Eggshell Paint, Silk Paint, & Gloss Paint?

The difference between Satin Paint, Gloss Paint and Eggshell Paints is sheen, “lustre” or shine. Gloss paint has a higher sheen than satin, which means it’s shinier with a greater sheen and lustre. A gloss surface reflects more light which means it will highlight flaws more than a satin finish. If you’d like your Annie Sloan Satin Paint to look more glossy, apply a coat of Gloss Chalk Paint Lacquer. Eggshell or Silk Paint are similar to Satin as all are considered a “mid-sheen” paint. Eggshell is commonly used to describe a wall paint with a slight sheen, and Silk is usually used for outdoor paints.
