Frottage Tabletop
by Annie Sloan
This gorgeous worn-looking tabletop has been painted by Annie Sloan in the Swedish county style.
You often see this rustic textured look in Swedish county houses, partly because of the old textured paints they have long used over all those wooden interiors, and partly in the way it is allowed to peel off over time. Annie has recreated it here with three of her Chalk Paint® colours: Aubusson Blue, Scandinavian Pink and Cream.
First Annie painted the table with Chalk Paint® in Scandinavian Pink. Once dry she watered down her second colour, Aubusson Blue, so it’s about the consistency of single cream. She then applied the mixture to the Cream in a manageable size. Taking a sheet of newspaper, she crumpled it up in her hands, spread it back out again and laid over the Aubusson Blue wash. She then rubbed the surface a few times and peeled back the sheet to reveal a wonderful aged patina. You will see uneven and blotchy paint, some flat bits, some textured and some stripped back to the first paint, which is the magic of this technique.
She repeated this process all over the table with the Aubusson Blue, and once dry repeated again with Cream.
The finished look is gloriously textured and layered. The legs of the table are painted with Coco and the whole piece is finished with Clear Wax for protection.
