Flagship Store Q&A: Doghead Designs
Tristan Merriam, Owner of Doghead Designs tell us more about his beautiful shop and why you need to visit…
When did the store open and why did you decide to open it?
Doghead Designs opened in March 2024. I had a much smaller shop before, but I moved to this one to be in a much more prominent area – the beautiful Victorian town of Clevedon which is on the coast and brimming with independent shops!
Tell us about the name, what inspired it?
I used to be a headteacher in a primary school and introduced a school dog. When I left education, Gatsby (my dog) came with me and very quickly became my mascot in my photographs of staged furniture. So…DOG + HEAD = DOGHEAD! And ‘Designs’ because I like alliteration! I wanted my business name to be something abstract and memorable!
Tell us about the shop…
My shop is a feast for the senses and colour and paint sits at the very heart of it. It stocks my painted furniture, Annie Sloan Chalk Paint (obviously!) and a whole host of interior-based handmade goods by local artisans and makers.
What is the local area like, where else might people visit alongside your store?
Clevedon has a wonderful vibe. It is beautiful and charming but also extremely creative and independent. Customers can expect to visit wonderful shops, cafes and restaurants as well as the beach, Clevedon Marine Lake and Clevedon Pier, named the ‘The most beautiful pier in England” by Sir John Betjeman.
Tell us about the in-store Chalk Paint workshops you run
I deliver the Chalk Paint Workshops at Doghead Designs. They are Mainly technique-based as well as 1:1 workshops where customers can bring in a piece of their own to work on alongside me.
Share a fun fact about the store
My studio space within the shop (which is also where I have all of the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint displayed, used to be a bra fitting room!
What do you love most having your store?
So much! I love being a part of a thriving community. I love meeting people and talking. I love that it is my safe space to paint. I love delivering workshops there and hosting events. I love the community of local makers that I support. I love the colour. I love the way it makes me feel every single day when I walk in!
Why should we come and visit?
It will leave you feeling uplifted and inspired…and who doesn’t appreciate a good dollop of dopamine!?!?
I am also extremely proud to have been chosen as an Annie Sloan Flagship Store. Alongside my role as Annie’s Brand Ambassador, I feel like a visit to Doghead Designs is a MUST for anyone who loves Chalk Paint!
