MATISSE INSPIRED CHRISTMAS NAPKIN RINGS

Create colourful quirky Christmas napkin rings to dress your festive table using our free templates

You will need

  • 120ml pot of Chalk Paint™  in Florence
  • 118ml pot of Metallic Paint in Traditional Gold
  • Matt or Gloss Lacquer
  • Templates
  • 1 x Detail Brushes
  • Carbon paper
  • Cardboard or paper
  • Craft knife/scalpel & scissors
  • Cutting mat if using scalpel or craft knife
  • MixMat or similar non-stick mat
  • Air-drying clay – 500g
  • Rolling pin
  • 2 Mixing Sticks or similar
  • Sandpaper
  • Cardboard tube from inside kitchen Paper Roll (or similar)

Step 1

Download and print the templates onto paper. Cut out the napkin ring shapes with a scalpel or scissors.

Step 2

On a protective, non-stick cover like a MixMat, roll out approximately half the pack of air-drying clay to a thickness of 5mm. Use two Mixing Sticks as guides.

Step 3

Place your templates on the clay and use a blunt knife or modelling tool to cut out your shapes. Use a cutting mat to protect your tabletop. Remove any excess clay.

Step 4

Wrap the clay around a cardboard tube and leave to dry for 24-48 hours, leaf side down to keep them closed. Once the outside is dry, remove from the tube for the inside to dry.

Step 5

Once dry, sand the decorations to create a smooth surface for painting with your chosen Chalk Paint. Paint the outside of the napkin ring while it’s still on the tube. Allow it to dry before painting the inside.

Step 6

Paint the edges with Metallic Gold Paint. Once dry, seal your napkin rings with coat of lacquer, inside and out to protect the fabric of your napkins.

Top tip

Wear gloves to avoid the clay drying out your hands. For a sharp edge on your napkin rings, use a knife or scalpel to cut the clay. Keep any offcuts and remaining clay in an airtight container to prevent it drying out.
