Folk Art Trunk
by Jeanie Simpson
Painter in Residence Jeanie Simpson created this rustic trunk in a Folk Art style using Chalk Paint®.
Painter in Residence Jeanie Simpson used Chalk Paint® to create an aged-paint look for a trunk that had been passed down through generations of her family. She was inspired by American Folk Art and artist Johannes Spitler, which is evident in her design.
The main body of the chest is painted in a mix of Chalk Paint® in Graphite, Aubusson and Napoleonic Blue. Jeanie drew her design on to the piece of furniture first and then painted it using Old White, Graphite, and a mix of Scandinavian Pink, Primer Red and a dash of Barcelona Orange. She heavily distressed the trunk with Annie Sloan Sanding Pads, taking the paint right back to the wood in places. To age the final painted finish, she first used a coat of Clear Chalk Paint® Wax and, whilst still wet, applied Dark Wax on top, working it into the paint to create an antiqued look. To find out more about using Dark Wax, watch Annie’s tutorial here.
