Creative ways to use Annie Sloan’s new Chalk Paint colours

The five new Annie Sloan Chalk Paint colours are perfect for mixing with existing colours in the palette and creating finishes like blending, ombré and applying multiple layers to create textured effects.

1) Tyrian Plum

Annie painted this ornate sideboard in Tyrian Plum. She then worked back into the piece with Honfleur and Burgundy, using a Chalk Paint Brush to blend the colours together. She then ‘feathered’ the colours together using the tip of the brush to create a smooth even surface. The inside of the drawers were painted in Emperor’s Silk and the details picked out in Capability Green using a Flat Detail Brush. The whole piece was waxed with two coats of Clear Chalk Paint Wax.

2) Sandalwood Red

To create this ombré effect, Annie painted the bottom of this cupboard with a coat of Emperor’s Silk. She then painted Sandalwood Red on the top half of the piece. Using a Chalk Paint Brush Annie then blended the colours together to make a new colour where they meet. The inside of the cupboard was painted Frida Blue. To give a playful Californian vibe, the wall was painted in stripes of Capability Green, Paloma, Louis Blue, Coolabah Green and Capability Green + Provence mixed with Old White.

3) Canvas

Inspired by the washed-out tones of a Sante Fe desert, this rustic piece was transformed by layering colours one over another. Firstly, Annie painted the whole piece in Paprika Red. She then followed this with layers of Honfleur, Country Grey and finally Canvas. She used a piece of cardboard to scrape thick layers of paint one on top of each other, letting some colours show through and some not. She let the piece dry completely between layers. When she was happy with the look, she sanded and waxed the piece with two coats of Clear Chalk Paint Wax.

4) Rococo White

Annie painted this ornate little dressing table in two layers of Rococo White. Using Svenska Blue she added thin hand painted lines around the edges of the drawers and then picked out the moulding details using Gold Size and Imitation Gold Leaf. She then waxed the whole piece using Clear Chalk Paint Wax which tones the Gold Leaf down a more muted brass shade.

5) Jaipur Pink

The drawers of this Indian cupboard were painted in Primer Red before the whole piece was painted in Jaipur Pink. The outline of the drawers were then painted in Old White. The whole piece was then sanded back revealing the Primer Red on the drawers beneath. The painting detail was done in Arles and Old White with dots in Barcelona Orange. The metal handles were painted in a mix of Florence and Provence.
