Gilded Trunk
by Felix Sloan
Annie’s son Felix Sloan transformed this old chest with Chalk Paint® and three Gilding Wax colours. The contrast between the Gilding Wax and the rich blues on the chest gives modern and bohemian feel.
First, Felix painted the trunk all over with Aubusson Blue, using a Chalk Paint® Brush in very direction to create plenty of texture. Once the paint has dried, he used Annie’s signature frottage technique to create a distressed look. He watered Graphite down to the consistency of around single cream and painted the wash over an area. Taking a sheet of newspaper, he crumpled it up before laying it back out flat across the still-wet paint wash. He gently removed the newspaper to reveal a patterned paintwork underneath, and repeated all over the piece. For a finishing touch he painted small squares of Florence on the bottom corners of the trunk. He also lightly sanded some areas for a final distress.
Once all the Chalk Paint® was applied Felix sealed everything with Clear Wax and left to dry. After a few hours, he masked an area for gilding in large geometric triangles. He then applied Gilding Wax in three colours; Bright Gold, Warm Gold and Copper. He applied these unevenly in varying concentrations to create interest and an aged patina.
If you’re using Gilding Wax and make a mistake, you can use Clear Wax as an eraser applying it over the top of the error and rubbing the excess away.
The cushion atop the trunk has been made from Linen Union in Provence + Aubusson Blue.
