Work with Paints and Pigments
Paint Alchemy (2001)
by Annie Sloan
Paint Alchemy demystifies the
craft of the artist to reveal how to create and transform paint
to make uniquely personalized colours for use on walls floor
and furniture.
There is no specialist equipment needed for
making paint as almost everything you need can be improvised
from your kitchen cupboards or nearby hardware store.
Pigments are simply the colouring
matter for paints, waxes and varnishes. .... the best analogy
for them is spices...
Polished Plaster
Otherwise known as Venetian Stucco or Marmorino.
Ingredients: 1 Kg polished plaster mix or equal
amounts of lime, cement, marble dust and water. 2 tsp limeproof
pigment. 2 tsp shading pigment, Clear wax.
When the plaster is dry the wall will be softly
and unevenly coloured. For a really high sheen apply a coat
of clear wax and buff with an electric polisher.
Classic Gesso
This is not a paint but a liquid coating for
wood, which dries to a smooth and absorbant but hard finish.
An ideal surface to be painted or gilded. Gesso can be built
up in relief designs or incised.
Ingredients: 15 g rabbitskin granules,
250 ml water, 500 g whiting.
